Unique Architectural Designs Still Used Today

Many buildings have been designed based on much earlier architectural ideas and designs. The Roman Empire had a huge impact on architecture and what is impressive is how much of the same ideas have continued through history.  It can actually be quite surprising when you realize that some key features of very modern buildings can be seen and traced back to older structures and even ancient ruins.

Roman Influence

Neoclassical architecture is based on designs from the Roman Empire, and this influence can be seen even in such famous buildings as Buckingham Palace, the Lincoln Memorial in the USA and the Prado Museum in Spain. Roman architecture and design features also provided inspiration for the design of the Natural History Museum of London and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Roman arches and grand columns are still a feature that is very commonly found in more recent builds. We note this type of architectures in such buildings as the White House in the United States of America. The influence of the Romans is not surprising considering how much power the empire had at one stage throughout the world.

Modern Design

An innovative architect is able to create such unique and fascinating designs that they are copied by others in later years. Frank Lloyd Wright was such man. He is considered by many to be the most famous American architect of all time, who was very innovative and chose to break with traditional designs and features. His work is still a major inspiration for many new architects and novices today. He based his designs on organic architecture, a philosophy which reconciled humans with their environment. He designed many famous buildings including the Guggenheim Museum of New York and the gorgeous Fallingwater. Lloyd Wright´s impact is also seen in the design and building of the Biltmore Hotel in Arizona. He not only designed structures, but also all the interior furnishings.

There are some amazing contemporary homes that have been designed based on Frank Lloyd Wright’s ideas. For example, architect David Small used such plans to create a home which was built in 2014 and shows off large windows and an open design. These were hallmarks of Frank Lloyd Wright.

He, along with the architect Louis Sullivan, were both people who were part of what became known as the Chicago School of Architecture. Sullivan, though, was more interested in very complex and ornate designs on the exteriors of buildings, which was in stark contrast to Lloyd Wright. No doubt, the price of materials and labor has a huge impact on which of the unique architectural designs of the past are still used today. Which is probably why Lloyd Wright is more popular as a design template for modern architects than Sullivan.

Modern architecture usually tries to blend form with function in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. It is unlikely that Roman inspired work will go away anytime soon as much of the designs focused on this very principle. It is incredible to see how much architecture has evolved while maintaining some ancient influences.
