If you are planning on remodeling your house, then you need to decide whether you need to get a professional or not. This decision may be based on what you want to achieve and your budget. On the one hand bringing in an architect could be very expensive, but on the other, you may be legally required to do so, depending on your plans. We have made a short list of some things you should consider to help you make your decision.
Plans and Codes
An architect is somebody who has been trained in engineering, building design and ergonomics. They can put you in touch with a good building contractor and can advise you on how to deal with and obtain the necessary permits. They also check that the building is constructed according to the plans and code and ensure that the work progresses according to expectations.
However, they do not come cheap, although they may negotiate their price depending on what is involved in the project and how big the project is. You will most likely need a specialist if you plan on taking on a big project;
experts suggest that you will need one if you are planning on remodeling the exterior part of a house or spending more than 5% of its value. Both architects and contractors are useful for big projects and can end up actually saving you money, but their approach is a bit different. Contractors build based on that which is logical while architects also take visual and aesthetic appeal into account.
If your project is not too big you can try hiring a trainee who is likely to charge less than an architect who is more experienced. You will definitely need to hire one if you require a building permit; in this case, you really have no choice and will have to spend the money, you cannot get a permit without their consent on the project. It really will depend on the scope of your project and the applicable laws where you live.
You can potentially hire an architect to simply draw up the blueprints and not have the them do all the site visits, or you could limit their role to a set number of site visits. This may also depend on how comfortable you feel about supervising the construction process yourself to some extent.
In some cases, you may be able to hire a certified professional building designer. Again, this may depend on what you need in order to get a building permit and whether you need a building permit for the type of work you are doing. A certified professional building designer does not have the level of education or licenses that an architect has. However, their fees will be lower and they may be able to help with a traditional plan. In general, make sure to consider not only the cost involved in hiring a professional architect but the permit requirements are for the city you live in and your remodeling will be a sure success.
